This webinar is Part 2 of a five-part series on the Additive Construction by Concrete Extrusion is about the emerging technology of 3D printed concrete and its application in concrete construction. Based on the forthcoming ACI 564 Emerging Technology Report on 3D Printed Concrete, the series follows the report’s chapter sequence to introduce key topics such as foundational terminology, processing platforms, printable materials, quality control, case studies, and future research needs. Each webinar focuses on selected chapters and provides a structured overview of current knowledge, practical considerations, and ongoing developments in additive construction by concrete extrusion.

Part 2 webinar covers Chapter 5, Quality Control of 3D Printed Concrete, of the upcoming ACI 564 Emerging Technology Report.  This webinar presents current approaches for evaluating the quality and performance of 3D-printed concrete throughout the additive construction process. Topics include fresh-state printability, extrudability, buildability, and open time; hardened mechanical properties, interlayer bonding, anisotropy, and durability; and emerging methods for nondestructive testing, automated process monitoring, and dimensional assessment of printed structures. The webinar will also highlight how material properties, printing parameters, and environmental conditions interact to influence quality, as well as current challenges and needs for standardized testing and quality-control procedures.

  1. Explain why quality-control approaches for 3D-printed concrete differ from those used in conventional cast-in-place concrete construction.
  2. Identify and compare methods for evaluating key fresh-state properties of printable concrete, including extrudability, buildability, printability window, and rheological behavior.
  3. Describe how the layer-by-layer printing process and key process parameters affect hardened concrete properties, including anisotropy, compressive and flexural strength, interlayer bonding, and durability.
  4. Identify nondestructive and digital measurement techniques for monitoring printed concrete and evaluating the dimensional accuracy and construction quality of 3D-printed structures.

Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (1.0 PDH).
