Course Overview
This webinar is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
Fiber-reinforced polymer materials are impacting concrete construction by offering benefits such as corrosion resistance, sustainable utilization of resources, electromagnetic transparency, and ease of handling. ACI CODE-440.11 provides minimum requirements for design of GFRP-reinforced concrete structures. A key Code requirement is that reinforcing bars must meet requirements of ASTM D7957-22, a materials standard for GFRP bars used as concrete reinforcement, which specifies mean tensile modulus must be at least 6500 ksi. ASTM D8505-23, a second materials standard for concrete reinforcement applicable to basalt and glass FRP bars, specifies mean tensile modulus must be at least 8700 ksi and is representative of what manufacturers are now producing. The existence of two materials standards, only one of which is permitted by ACI CODE-440.11, has resulted in questions as to how the Code can be used to design reinforced concrete structures with “higher-modulus” GFRP bars. This webinar will answer that question while providing examples of how the use of higher-modulus GFRP bars can be advantageous in practical applications.
Learning Objectives
1. Recognize the advantages of using higher-modulus GFRP bars to meet the requirements of ACI CODE-440.11;
2. Identify higher-modulus GFRP bars that meet the specification and performance characteristics required by ACI CODE-440.11;
3. Demonstrate the differences between lower-modulus and higher-modulus bars in several design applications;
4. Understand how higher-modulus bars affect practical applications, challenges, and opportunities for use of GFRP-reinforced concrete in construction.
