This course covers Chapter 7, Structural Repair & Strengthening, of ACI 546R-14: Guide to Concrete Repair.Structural repairs and structural strengthening of distressed or deteriorated reinforced concrete buildings require extensive planning, evaluation, design, and execution to restore distressed reinforced concrete members to original strength. This course will discuss different common structural repair methods to strengthen distressed reinforced concrete member capacities such as: structural crack repair; strengthening with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement; strengthening with external steel plates with through-bolts; strengthening with externally bonded steel reinforcing; strengthening with the addition of reinforced concrete area to members; and strengthening with external post tensioning to increase beam capacities and other strengthening methods.

This course also discusses methods and shows examples to strengthen overstressed reinforced concrete members using supplemental members, such as temporary or permanent shoring that is normally easier to design, install, and explain. This course will also explain strategies to restore capacity to in-place corroded reinforcement and spalled concrete members through the addition of new sectional reinforced concrete that is anchored into existing deteriorated reinforced concrete members.

2. Chapter 7: Structural Repair & Strengthening (Sections 6 - 9) by John S. Lund
1. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of performing internal structural repairs to restore load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete members (slabs and walls) using epoxy injection crack repair.
2. Describe how to use fiber-reinforcing polymer (FRP) reinforcement to strengthen reinforced concrete beams, slabs, and columns to meet current load requirements.
3. Explain the design and installation steps for adding supplemental members (shores) to regain structural strength in reinforced concrete members that have experienced overstress in flexure and shear.
4. Describe the design and installation steps to add outer perimeter reinforced concrete sectional areas to columns, beams, and slab members.
