The presentations in this course will define several elements necessary to ensure successful results when installing architectural cast-in-place concrete. This course discusses how concrete materials take on color and texture through color pigments and supplementary cementitious materials, and shapes and textures through formwork and finishing techniques, such as sand-blasting, to produce architectural concrete that is beautiful and sustainable. Architectural concrete specifications taken from ACI 301 are used to define contractor’s responsibilities for placing and finishing architectural concrete structures. The course will also cover how difficult it is for architects and designers to communicate color, texture, and finish and how difficult it is to produce mock-up panels that gain final architect and owner acceptance. Also covered are best practices and materials for architectural concrete formwork and form release agents to reduce non-uniformity. A case study is presented on lessons learned from a contractor’s extensive efforts to develop numerous mock-up panels with different concrete mixtures to obtain an approved architectural concrete color and appearance for an artistic architectural concrete art museum project.

The contents of this course include six recorded presentations from the ACI 2020 Fall Virtual Convention:
1. Architectural Concrete – Your Best Choice for Sustainable Design, by Larry Rowland, Lehigh White Cement Company
2. Architectural Concrete – One person’s “defect” maybe another person’s “feature”, by Kenneth Hover, Cornell University
3. Architectural Concrete – Forming Panel Selection and Care Critical Decisions, by Ken Pratt, Swanson Group
4. Architectural Concrete – Architectural Form--Release Agent, by Destry Kenning, Nox-Crete Products Group5. Unique Challenges at LACMA Project, by Mike Daniel, Largo Concrete6. Case Study – ASU BioDesign C, by Tarek Khan, Master Builders Solutions
1. Explain concrete mixture constituents that effect the color and look of architectural concrete.
2. Describe how proper and thorough specification of architectural concrete (ACI 301) can help achieve consistent architectural concrete properties expected by owners and architects.
3. Describe the use of mock-up panels as a method for contractors to demonstrate the architect’s vision of finished architectural concrete.
4. Recall properties of architectural concrete formwork and form release agents that are commonly used to help ensure architectural concrete uniformity.
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (1.0 PDH).
