Course Overview
This course shows how consolidation needs to be reconsidered for modern twenty-first century concrete mixtures. The presentations show the influence of concrete proportioning and workability on the consolidation energy necessary to successfully place concrete structures. The course will describe various issues concerning proper vibration and consolidating concrete that lead to consolidating concrete successfully and some problems that occur under poor consolidation. There will be a focus on flowable concrete and methods to consolidate properly. Examples will be given of uses of self-consolidating concrete in otherwise hard-to-consolidate members that were successfully placed with few imperfections and little segregation.

• Concrete Properties, Placement Techniques, and Consolidation—How They Interact by Joseph A. Daczko, BASF
• Stability and Retention of Entrained Air in Vibrated Concrete by David A. Lange, University of Illinois
Learning Objectives
1. Explain the interaction among concrete proportioning, workability, and the amount of required consolidation energy necessary to successfully place concrete in various forms.
2. Identify other placement parameters that interact with the consolidation process to affect concrete workability negatively and positively.
3. Describe how different types and portions of sand and coarse aggregate interact with the consolidation energy needed to successfully place concrete
4. Describe examples of new concrete technologies that influence the consolidation process, such as higher-vibration vibrators and external vibrators.
