For many years, the earth’s natural resources have been consumed at a very high rate. Potential resource depletion, CO2 emissions, and high energy consumption rates in production increase the necessity of recycling. All sectors of society are responsible for these concerns, especially the construction industry. As a primary construction material, concrete is increasingly judged by its environmental impacts, and reusing readily available concrete is becoming very important. Considering that much of the US infrastructures and urban buildings now require renovation and replacement, the concrete left behind can be a valuable aggregate source for new concrete. Such concrete is usually called Recycled Aggregate Concrete. Cost analyses show that recycling concrete as aggregate for new concrete production can be a cost-effective method for construction.

• Utilization of Hybrid Recycled and Manufactured Steel Fibers to Achieve Multiscale Fiber Reinforcement in Concrete by Xijun (Jeff) Shi, Texas State University
1. Compare recycled aggregate concrete to natural aggregate concrete and assess the effects of adding various construction waste materials on recycled concrete properties.
2. Explain various design, testing, and validation methods for concrete produced with recycled materials, including emerging technologies.
3. Describe how recycled concrete saves natural resources, reduces CO2 emissions, and contributes to a sustainable environment.
4. Create public awareness of recycled concrete, emphasizing its role in reducing landfills and construction waste and saving natural resources and the ecological environment.
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.15 CEU (1.5 PDH).
