Course Overview
This is a recorded webinar from February 6, 2018.
Over six percent of bridges in the United States are structurally deficient due to corrosion-related damage with a direct annual cost of over $8 billion and indirect costs estimated at 10 times this amount. A high percentage of this damage is due to corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete. This webinar describes the causes and process of corrosion of reinforcing steel; competing corrosion protection systems, including low-permeability concrete, protective membranes, protective coating on the reinforcement, suppression of the electrochemical reaction, and corrosion-resistant metals; research on different corrosion protection systems; and comparisons of the life expectancy and cost-effectiveness of the systems in new construction based on the performance of concrete bridge decks
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the process and controlling factors governing the corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete.
2. Describe the two most common causes of corrosion in reinforcing steel.
3. Discuss the relative life expectancy and effectiveness of the different corrosion protection systems available for reinforcing steel.
4. State the measure of the effectiveness of stainless steel reinforcement that can be judged during inspection of the reinforcement prior to placement.
