This is a recorded webinar from November 21, 2024.

This webinar is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

Pultrusion of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites allows the manufacturing of limitless lightweight and non-metallic shapes and structural profiles for use in any type of construction, including heavy-civil infrastructure, commercial, and residential structures. FRP pultruded structures are supported and accepted by recognized design standards, including the recently published ASCE/SEI 74-23. This standard represents a key milestone to provide engineers, owners, specifiers, and regulators with a foundation to adopt pultruded FRP for structural systems, leveraging the many benefits provided by the lightweight, corrosion-resistant FRP material. This webinar provides the participant with the necessary initial knowledge, tools, and resources to understand “why, what, how” to design with FRP pultruded elements based on ASCE/SEI 74. Key similarities and differences when designing with FRP compared to steel will be discussed, and design examples will be provided to accelerate the learning curve when designing with FRP structural elements. In addition, construction examples of FRP pultruded structures will be provided, reflecting the benefits of adopting this construction material.
1. Understand the fundamental design principles of pultruded composite beams, columns, and connections.
2. Understand the design process for non-metallic pultruded structures based on ASCE/SEI 74-23.
3. Learn key similarities and differences when designing with FRP compared to steel.
4. Learn from construction examples using FRP pultrude structures.
