Course Overview
The course will begin with a brief introduction to the new ACI PRC-228.4-23 document, Guide for Visual Condition Survey of Concrete. This course will provide discussions on planning, performing, and documentation visual condition surveys of damaged concrete structures, by correlating surveys with various case studies. Discussion of visual survey aids, such as non-destructive methods, digital crack mapping techniques, photogrammetry digital assessments, and high-resolution imaging (HRI) drone surveys on damaged bridge decks. Further discussion is made concerning intrusive testing, such as core sampling and petrographic studies. Speakers will present case studies and examples of new or existing methods for visual surveys or condition assessments.
The contents of this course include three recorded presentations from the ACI 2023 Fall Convention:
1. Introduction to PRC-228.4 and Project Application of Visual Assessment and Petrography by Heather Todak and Chunyu (Joe) Qiao, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.
2. Digital Inspection of a Concrete Settling Basin in Steel Factory by Hamed Layssi, Fprimec Solutions Inc.
3. Applications of Photogrammetry on Multiple Bridges Throughout the US for Visual Condition Assessment by Marisol Tsui-Chang, Bridge Diagnostics, Inc.
Learning Objectives
1. Discuss the new ACI PRC- 228.4-23 document, Guide for Visual Condition Surveys of Concrete and recall the visual library features shown in this document.
2. Discuss how visual survey data can be obtained and used to assess the current condition of a structure.
3. Review potential uses of visual inspection technology to evaluate the effect of cracking and damage on the performance and/or durability of the structure over time.
4. Discuss the role of visual inspection in maintenance strategies, scheduling, and prioritization of damaged structures, including deteriorated bridge deck maintenance.
