This seminar is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

This session will explore emerging and smart technologies for nonmetallic building materials, including smart materials for buildings, nanotechnology-based nonmetallic materials in construction applications, 3D printing with nonmetallic construction materials, thermally and acoustically advanced materials, and automated or robotic construction using nonmetallic building materials. Presentations will highlight current applications, case studies, and future trends shaping the use of advanced nonmetallic materials in buildings.

  1. Identify emerging smart nonmetallic materials for building applications and describe how they can improve performance, resilience, and functionality.
  2. Explain the role of nanotechnology in developing nonmetallic materials for construction applications.
  3. Describe current and potential uses of 3D printing with nonmetallic construction materials.
  4. Learn how nano grouting can penetrate micro-capillaries and sub-micron pores in aging dam structures, significantly reducing water loss and improving long-term impermeability, using a case study.
  5. Discuss thermally and acoustically advanced nonmetallic materials for buildings and their potential performance benefits.
  6. Recognize future trends in automated, robotic, and intelligent construction using nonmetallic building materials.
