Course Overview
This recorded webinar from August 5, 2014 briefly discusses the unique material properties of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) and the provisions of its design, construction, and inspection. The presentation ends with a brief discussion of case studies on the use of FRCM system repair and strengthening.FRCM systems for repairing and strengthening concrete and masonry structures are an alternative to traditional techniques like fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP), steel plate bonding, section enlargement, and external post-tensioning. FRCM is a composite material consisting of one or more layers of cement-based matrix reinforced with dry fibers in the form of open mesh or fabric. The cement-based matrices are typically made of combinations of portland cement, silica fume and fly ash as the binder. When adhered to concrete or masonry structural members, they form an FRCM system that acts as supplemental, externally bonded reinforcement.
Learning Objectives
1. Recognize a novel structural strengthening system for concrete and masonry structures: fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM).
2. Understand how innovation can be implemented in the International Code (I-Codes) family.
3. Develop knowledge on the primary mechanical characteristics of FRCM and its performance when applied to reinforced concrete slabs.
4. Become acquainted with ACI 549.4R-13, ”Guide to Design and Construction of Externally Bonded Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) Systems for Repair and Strengthening Concrete and Masonry Structures,” and the format of one of its design examples.
