Fiber reinforcement is the most effective way of improving the resistance of concrete to cracking, but little is known of the benefits of fiber reinforcement on long term durability, as well as reduction in carbon footprint. The purpose of this course is to bring together experts from around the world to discuss studies where fiber reinforcement enhanced long term durability and why the use of fibers is a sustainable solution, to learn from real life situations, to learn about benefits of using fibers to reduce carbon footprint and to lay the foundation for Life Cycle Engineering Analysis with fiber reinforced concrete (FRC). Presentation topics will be related to the benefits of using fibers to enhance long term performance of concrete with and without conventional reinforcement and to explain why the use of fibers is a sustainable solution. Contractors, material suppliers, engineers, architects, researchers and scientists will benefit from this course.

The contents of this course include four recorded presentations from the ACI 2024 Fall Convention:

• Reinforcing Concrete Applications with Less Carbon Footprint and Longer Life Cycles by Carl Labbe, Sika

• Fiber-Reinforced Concrete for the Design of Efficient and Sustainable Gravity Energy Storage Systems by Francesco Lo Monte, Politecnico di Milano

• Precast Concrete Slabs Reinforced with Recycled Steel Fibers to Satisfy Green Public Procurement by Alessandro Fantilli, Polytechnic University of Turin

• Rapid Strength Gaining FRC for Sustainable Regeneration of Tunnel Linings by Liberato Ferrara, Polytechnic University of Milan

1. Explain why FRC is a sustainable solution.
2. Discuss the benefits of fiber reinforcement to reduction of carbon footprint.
3. Report on how the reduction in carbon footprint of FRC is calculated and quantified.
4. Analyze applications where FRC have been successfully used and provided a durable and sustainable solution.
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (1.0 PDH).
