Course Overview
This is a three-part recorded webinar series from August 15 - 17, 2017.Externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems have been used to strengthen and retrofit existing concrete structures around the world since the mid-1980s. Structural elements strengthened with externally bonded FRP systems include beams, slabs, columns, walls, joints/connections, chimneys and smokestacks, vaults, domes, tunnels, silos, pipes, and trusses. Externally bonded FRP systems were developed as alternatives to traditional external reinforcing techniques such as steel plate bonding and steel or concrete column jacketing. Guidelines from ACI 440.2R-17, “Guide for the Design and Construction of Externally Bonded FRP Systems for Strengthening Concrete Structures,” and ACI 440.7R-10, “Guide for the Design and Construction of Externally Bonded Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Systems for Strengthening Unreinforced Masonry Structures,” will be discussed.Part 1 introduces fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, the many externally bonded FRP strengthening systems, and construction guidelines. Part 2 covers the design of externally bonded FRP systems for flexural strengthening, shear strengthening, confinement, and other engineering considerations. Part 3 focuses on FRP systems used to strengthen unreinforced masonry structures.Learning ObjectivesIntroduction to Externally Bonded FRP Systems1. Identify the components of FRP material2. Understand the mechanical properties of FRP3. Summarize typical uses of FRP in construction4. List FRP strengthening systems 5. Review construction guidelinesDesign of Externally Bonded FRP Systems1. Describe flexural design procedure of concrete members using externally applied FRP2. Discuss shear design procedure of concrete members using externally applied FRP3. Explain design procedures for concrete member confinement using FRP4. Identify strengthening limits while using FRP5. List detailing considerationsExternally Bonded FRP Systems for Unreinforced Masonry Structures1. Describe design procedure for masonry strengthening using FRP to resist out of plane loads2. Explain design procedure for masonry strengthening using FRP to resist in plane loads3. Review detailing procedures4. List installation guidelines
