This webinar is Part 1 of a six-part series on the finite element method (FEM) for approximate structural analysis. The series presents practical concepts for linear elastic finite element analysis of structures, including preprocessing, analysis, and post-processing. The series is intended to bridge mathematical concepts and physical engineering behavior so practitioners can better evaluate finite element structural models and analysis results.

Part 1 introduces the finite element method workflow and illustrates key relationships between mathematical formulation and physical engineering interpretation. The webinar also provides a brief history of numerical analysis development and explains how those developments relate to current finite element practice in structural engineering.

  2. Explain key mathematical concepts used in a typical finite element analysis.
  3. Summarize the historical development of numerical analysis methods for structures.
  4. Relate structural modeling and numerical approximation concepts to physical engineering behavior in finite element analysis.
