This webinar is Part 5 of a six-part series on the finite element method (FEM) for approximate structural analysis. The series presents practical concepts for linear elastic finite element analysis of structures, including preprocessing, analysis, and post-processing. The series is intended to bridge mathematical concepts and physical engineering behavior so practitioners can better evaluate finite element structural models and analysis results. Viewing the previous parts is encouraged but not required.

Part 5 focuses on post-processing techniques used to interpret finite element analysis results. The webinar provides practical recommendations for extracting internal forces, moments, and stress resultants at locations of interest for structural components such as slabs, walls, and mat foundations. Topics include one-dimensional, two-dimensional shell or plate, and three-dimensional solid element results, as well as smoothing, integration, transformation, permutation, and combination of finite element results.

  1. Describe common post-processing techniques used to interpret finite element analysis outputs.
  2. Explain methods for extracting internal forces and moments at locations of interest for structural design.
  3. Compare result interpretation approaches for one-dimensional elements, two-dimensional shell or plate elements, and three-dimensional solid elements.
  4. Apply basic post-processing concepts, including smoothing, integration, transformation, permutation, and combination of finite element results.
