This webinar is Part 6 of a six-part series on the finite element method (FEM) for approximate structural analysis. The series presents practical concepts for linear elastic finite element analysis of structures, including preprocessing, analysis, and post-processing. The series is intended to bridge mathematical concepts and physical engineering behavior so practitioners can better evaluate finite element structural models and analysis results. Viewing the previous parts is encouraged but not required.

Part 6 focuses on reliability considerations for approximate structural analysis using finite element methods. Topics include sanity checks based on structural equilibrium, compatibility, consistency of modeling assumptions, analysis procedures, post-processing, and combination of results. The webinar also introduces categories of finite element analysis errors and practical techniques for calibration, verification, and validation of model inputs and outputs.

  1. Describe reliability considerations associated with approximate finite element structural analysis.
  2. Apply sanity checks based on structural equilibrium, compatibility, modeling consistency, analysis procedures, post-processing, and result combinations.
  3. Classify common types of finite element analysis errors and identify practical methods for recognizing and resolving them.
  4. Explain calibration, verification, and validation techniques used to address uncertainties in finite element analysis inputs and outputs.
