This module is based on two articles from Concrete International magazine. The first, “Practical Design: A Supplement to Academics: Floor Openings in Two-Way Slabs,” is intended to assist design and construction professionals with making openings in two-way slabs. This includes selecting size and location of openings, how openings are created, and when to add strengthening. The second, “Detailing Corner: Reinforcing Bar Layout for Two-Way Slabs,” provides suggestions for good detailing practices.
1. Describe the differences between flat plates, flat slabs, and two-way beam-supported slabs.
2. Discuss the layout of two-way slabs.
3. Explain the differences between large and small openings.
4. Recognize the methods available for strengthening, if needed.
Read and study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (1.0 PDH).
