This course will be of interest to design engineers, contractors, formwork engineers and manufacturers, and others interested in concrete formwork construction practices. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from design and construction formwork successes as well as unsuccessful projects and learn about the various types of formwork, formwork shoring and reshoring sequencing, formwork economics, formwork troubleshooting, tolerances, formwork inspection, formwork deficiencies and safety issues during design and construction of formwork operations.

The contents of this course include six recorded presentations from the ACI 2021 Fall Virtual Convention.
• What Contractors and Engineers Should Know About Reshoring and Backshoring Sequencing, by Mary Bordner-Tanck, Bordner Engineering Services, LLC
• Tall Tree Column Formwork Challenge at St. Regis, Chicago, by Eamonn Connolly, James McHugh Construction Co.
• Shoring and Reshoring Per Pour Inspections— What to Look For, by Kris Hughes, Baker Concrete Construction, Inc.
• Formwork Design and Construction Practices with Respect to Achieving Specified Tolerances, by Eric Peterson, Webcor Builders
• Formwork Construction Oversight: Formwork Construction Deficiencies and Prevention, by Pericles Stivaros, GEI Consultants, Inc.
• Ensuring Formwork Compliance in a Non-Conforming World—Formwork Specifications, by Daniel Toon, United Forming, Inc.
1. Explain sequence of designing, construction, shoring, reshoring, and backshoring on multi-story horizontal concrete slabs to safely support placed concrete and construction loads.
2. Review construction tolerances related to formwork installation for concrete horizontally in floors or vertically in columns and walls.
3. Describe strategies for inspection of horizontal slab shores, reshores, and backshores to identify safe and unsafe practices.
4. Describe responsibilities for formwork design and review design and construction deficiencies that may lead to formwork failures.
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.2 CEU (2.0 PDH).
