Course Overview
This session will provide state-of-the-art of load testing existing structures, including monotonic and cyclic load tests as specified in ACI 318 and ACI 437.2 and concrete core tests. Selected presentations will highlight interesting load testing case studies, review lessons learned during testing, and provide information regarding best practices when load testing. The presentation concludes with many examples that identify ways to prevent mistakes or mishaps in administering load tests of various existing structures.
The contents of this course include three recorded presentations from the ACI 2017 Fall Convention:
• Load Testing of a Parking Structure Due to Low Concrete Compressive Strengths by Frederick D. Heidbrink, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.; and Robert Kuykendall, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.
• Cyclic Load Testing for the Safety Assessment of Existing Reinforced Concrete Structures According to ACI 437: Recent Developments and Case Studies by Antonio Brancaccio, Experimentation S.r.1; and Antonio Nanni, University of Miami
• Load Testing of Concrete Structures: An Engineer’s Perspective by Filippo Masetti, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.; and Nestore Galati, Structural Technologies
Learning Objectives
1. Explain how concrete core tests are planned, administered, interpreted, and measured against acceptance criteria to qualify strength of placed concrete that previously showed low-strength results from laboratory tests.
2. Describe the process of carrying out and monitoring cyclic load tests to slabs, beams, girders, and how to assess test results.
3. Explain the negative effect of results of load tests on existing members due to differential temperatures on interior and exterior sides of members during the load testing.
4. Identify several potential mistakes that can happen when performing load tests on existing members.
Instructions
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (1.0 PDH). Continuing Education Credit: 0.1 CEU (1.0 PDH)Approved by AIA (LU/HSW) and ICCAccess Period: 30 days
