Course Overview
Module 4 provides a comprehensive look at material- and mixture-level strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of concrete. Part A focuses on reducing clinker content through SCMs, limestone additions, and alternative binders, along with their impacts on hydration, early strength, and construction practices. Part B extends these concepts into real-world applications, demonstrating how optimized aggregates, EPD-based evaluation, pavement design, and tilt-up construction can utilize low-carbon mixtures effectively. Together, this module bridges theory with field implementation, enabling practical, performance-based low-carbon concrete solutions.
Learning Objectives
Explain why the industry is transitioning from high-clinker to low-clinker cement systems.
Describe how SCMs, limestone additions, and alternative binders affect hydration, strength, and durability.
Identify strategies to accelerate early-age hydration in low-clinker cements.
Recognize how aggregate packing models contribute to reducing cement content while maintaining performance.
Evaluate lightweight aggregate concrete using EPDs and understand its sustainability implications.
Apply key principles for designing lower-carbon concrete pavements.
Describe how low-carbon concrete performs in tilt-up wall panel construction and practical considerations for placement.
Integrate material-level strategies and field practices to select or design effective low-carbon concrete mixtures for various applications.
Instructions
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 12-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.2 CEU (2.0 PDH).
