Over the years, mass concrete has evolved from the traditional dams and other large infrastructure to modern thermally controlled mass concrete that typically has higher cementitious contents but still requires careful thermal considerations. While the look of mass concrete has changed, it is important to understand when a placement will behave as mass concrete and how to address the thermal stresses. This session will discuss the evolution of mass concrete, providing examples and best practices for traditional mass placements as well as modern; it will be of interest to owners, consultants, contractors, manufacturers, and educators.
1. Analyze unique design and construction considerations for mass concrete placements.
2. Define typical maximum temperature and difference limits, and why they are important.
3. Recognize when a placement will behave as mass concrete.
4. Review optimized concrete mixes and improvements of performance based thermal control plans.
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.15 CEU (1.5 PDH).
