A growing trend in the concrete industry is to provide less prescriptive and more performance-based concrete mixture specifications to allow contractors more workable materials and methods to meet concrete placement and performance expectations. Writing specifications using a performance approach requires the contractor to meet set performance goals through verification by testing using ASTM test standards. In this course, use of performance-based specifications are demonstrated in construction of successful slabs-on-ground projects and high rise reinforced concrete building projects. The presentations will demonstrate successful projects – slabs-on-ground projects and high-rise concrete building projects – where the performance-based approach was successfully implemented through active participation of concrete ready mixed suppliers, concrete contractors, design engineers, testing agencies, and owner representatives.

The contents of this course include three recorded presentations from the ACI 2018 Fall Convention:
• Concrete Slabs-on-Ground and the Practicality of Performance-Based Specifications, by Patrick Harrison, Structural Services, Inc.
• Performance Spec Concrete for a Super-Tall Building, by Eamonn Connolly, James McHugh Construction Co; and Max Levin, James McHugh Construction Co
• Regional Differences in Concrete Performance, by Paul Treacy, James McHugh Construction Co
1. Explain why performance-based concrete mixture specification requirements can lead to successful placements of slabs-on-ground for commercial or industrial buildings.
2. Discuss effects that fly ash and water reducing admixtures have on the quality of concrete floor placements.
3. Recall steps required, including some testing by the concrete contractor, to pump and place concrete to upper floors in high rise or super tall buildings.
4. Explain how building contractors bring together concrete contractors, testing agencies, and licensed design engineers to re-examine and possibly modify mixture designs to meet challenging concrete performance criteria in super-tall buildings, such as maintaining good pumpable non-segregating concrete to upper floors, maintaining consistent modulus of elasticity stiffness properties, and maintaining temperature requirements for mass concrete placements.
