Course Overview
Presentations are solicited to share a holistic approach to concrete construction with respect to planning, placing, protecting, and curing concrete elements in adverse weather and environmental conditions – especially in consideration of sustainability. The main objective of this course is to present a practitioner’s perspective on issues related to properly protecting and curing concrete. By attending this course, attendees will learn how adverse conditions impact the durability and life-cycle of concrete and the importance of proper planning, placing, protecting, and curing. Presenters will share updates on committee standards and discuss strategies to produce quality concrete in adverse conditions common to the construction industry.
The contents of this course include four recorded presentations from the ACI 2023 Spring Convention. 1. Cold Weather Concrete—Current Research and Case Studies, by Ben Watts, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
2. Mass Concrete— Planning and Thermal Protection in Various Adverse Conditions, by Oscar Antommattei, Kiewit Engineering Group Inc.
3. Performance of Slab-On-Grade Construction Related to Curing Quality, by Dan Zollinger, Texas A&M Transportation Institute
4. Placing and Curing Concrete in Adverse Conditions—Hot and Cold Weather Case Studies, by Cawsie Jijina, Severud Associates
Learning Objectives
1. Explore best practices and state of the art methods to address various cold weather concrete placing and curing conditions, review current research findings regarding how concrete cures in dramatically cold conditions.
2. Explore best practices and state of the art methods when mass concrete is placed in adverse conditions, learn important aspects of developing and executing a thermal control plan.
3. Understand both risks and opportunities when curing concrete while juggling environmental impacts and constructability concerns, maintain schedule and use proper planning to your advantage.
4. Consider how locality affects planning, placing, and curing concrete. Contractors are more geographically mobile than in the past. To be successful, contractors must plan ahead and know local conditions that may impact concrete placement and curing.
