The cement and concrete industry is shifting from cements that are predominantly clinker-based (>95%) to systems to systems with lower clinker contents. The history of limestone additions to cement will be discussed with respect to how these changes impact chemical reactions and properties. This presentation will discuss the shift from conventional mixtures to mixtures with higher volumes of conventional supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and alternative supplementary cements. Finally, the implications on curing and placement will be discussed.
1. Assess carbon reduction/clinker reduction strategies for concrete.
2. Understand the role of binder chemistry and reactivity.
3. Evaluate the reactivity of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) through appropriate testing methods.
4. Compare and contrast known construction practices and how they apply to low-clinker concrete.
