Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforced concrete has many practical advantages, however the engineering and use of GFRP bars requires specific considerations that are different than the ways that steel reinforced concrete is designed and constructed. This presentation will focus on the major differences between GFRP and steel reinforcement. It will provide useful guidance for any engineer or contractor interested in using GFRP bars. New manuals that focus on assisting the engineer in the design process of GFRP reinforced concrete and that focus on helping contractors in the installation of GFRP bars will be highlighted. The content of these key resources will be covered in order to help engineers and contractors acclimate to the use of GFRP bars.

1. Identify the basic material performance properties of GFRP reinforcing bars; how they compare to traditional steel reinforcement; and where they would be used.
2. List engineering concepts that make GFRP reinforced concrete unique and how these compare to steel reinforced concrete.
3. Discuss knowledge on the basic installation of GFRP bars.
4. Summarize the resources available to assist designers and contractors in the use of GFRP bars.
