This module based on Chapters 8 and 9 excerpted from ACI 445.1R-12, “Report on Torsion in Structural Concrete,” address the detailing requirements of transverse and longitudinal reinforcement in torsional members. Additionally, the chapters provide information about detailing at supports and review torsion design procedures by ACI 318-11, EC2-04, and CSA-A23.3-04 codes. This document was developed by ACI Committee 445 and approved by the ACI Technical Activities Committee.
1. Recognize the need for proper torsion reinforcement detailing for the safe design of reinforced and prestressed concrete members.
2. Explain how St. Venant’s circulatory shear flow pattern affects torsion design procedures in ACI 318-11.
3. Identify the limitations on effective closed tie spacing in members subjected to torsion.
4. Understand the design assumptions for torsion provided in ACI 318-11.
Read and study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.1 CEU (1.0 PDH).
