This is a recorded virtual seminar from September 24, 2024.

This course is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

This course will provide an in-depth exploration of innovative applications of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites in structural rehabilitation and strengthening. Attendees will gain insights into cutting-edge techniques for repairing and reinforcing various structures, from marine piles in harsh environments to seismic retrofitting of buildings and ensuring the safety of bridge structures. The course will also introduce the new ACI CODE 440.13-24, which establishes design methodologies for FRP-based repairs in structural concrete. This course is designed for engineers, architects, and construction professionals looking to enhance their knowledge of FRP composites and their application in modern structural engineering.

Speakers include:
• Introduction to ACI CODE 440.13-24 Strengthening Structural Concrete with Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Systems by Kent A. Harries, University of Pittsburgh
• Seismic Retrofit of Concrete Structures Using Externally Bonded FRP by Tarek Alkhrdaji, Structural Technologies
• Retrofit and Rehabilitation Strategies with Advanced Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites by Shreya Vemuganti, University of Oklahoma
• Underwater Encapsulation with FRP Systems, Will Gold, American Concrete
• Unique Challenges in Load Rating and Retrofitting a 1920s Chicago Building for Repurposing as a Data Center by Kevin Walsh, Frost Engineering and Ahmad Alshwaiki
• Polyurethane Flexible Joint as An Adhesive Bonding: The Safety Tape Solutions by Prof. Dr. Arkadiusz Kwiecień, Cracow University of Technology
• Seismic Strengthening of Concrete Floor Diaphragms Using FRP Based on Full-scale Testing by Enrique del Rey Castillo, University of Auckland, New Zealand and Aniket D Borwankar, Simpson Strong Tie
1. Describe the challenges and solutions in marine pile repair using advanced carbon fiber composites.
2. Explore the use of FRP systems for seismic strengthening of building diaphragms.
3. Learn about the innovative Safety Tape (ST) system for enhancing the safety and longevity of bridge structures.
4. Examine the new ACI CODE 440.13-24 and its implications for FRP-based repair and rehabilitation.
5. Compare the performance of carbon fiber and glass fiber jackets in structural repair.
6. Evaluate the benefits of epoxy grout in conjunction with FRP composites for structural strengthening.
7. Discuss the integration of FRP systems with traditional reinforcement techniques in various structural applications.
8. Analyze real-world case studies and ongoing research on FRP systems in different structural contexts.
