Course Description
Contractors, Building Officials and Owners all strive for completed projects without Imperfections. But imperfections, blemishes of even defects do occur. This can include deviations from a smooth uniform surface to bug holes, efflorescence, pour lines, laitance, pop outs, rock pockets, uncontrolled cracking or more. Is the issue just surficial or upon a closer look more severe? ACI 301, Specifications for Concrete Construction and ACI 117, Specifications for Tolerances of Concrete Construction, discuss common surfaces finishes, jointing to control cracking, curing options and general repair of surface defects. Inspections steps that could reduce or prevent such defects? A few examples of encountered field conditions are presented that may prevent a similar issue on your project.
Learning Objective
1. Discuss role of form condition, inadequate consolidation and/or concrete mix designs can contribute to non-uniform appearance, bug holes, rock pockets or honeycomb. 2. Explain how mix designs, temperature at time of placement, presence of a vapor barrier and timing of finishing, can result in blisters or even delaminations.3. Discuss survey methods can be used to determine extent and severity of a defect?4. Identify important repair aspects: Removal of unsound concrete, proper surface preparation, placement and curing of repair material.
