Shrinkage cracking is a major concern for certain projects and there are many different admixtures on the market that are intended to serve as a viable, cost-effective solutions. Implementation of certain technologies, however, is not always as effective. Issues due to concrete shrinkage can arise at early ages (during construction or within the first few days after placement) or in the following years during service due to materials, errors in batching, or construction procedures. Furthermore, the ways in which shrinkage is measured do not always account for concrete behavior/properties at early ages, making it difficult to quantify the effects of a given shrinkage reduction technology. Presentations include a variety of topics from emerging technologies and test procedures, construction practices and field observations, and different perspectives of established technologies. Specific presentations will cover different approaches to internal curing, use of shrinkage reducing admixtures, micro reinforcing, shrinkage compensating admixtures, supplementary cementitious materials, high-performance concrete, a variation in free shrinkage testing, and field observations.

The contents of this course include four recorded presentations from the ACI 2020 Fall Virtual Convention. In addition, a Panel Discussion is included and highly recommended to listen to, however, the quiz questions are based solely on the presentations and not on the material in the panel discussion.
1. Use of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete to Mitigate Reduce Early-Age Cracking in Concrete Structures, by Anton Schindler, Auburn University
2. Internal Curing Using Super-Absorbent Polymers, by Matthew D'Ambrosia, MJ2 Consulting, PLLC
3. Designing Concrete with a Shrinkage-Reducing Admixtures to Optimize Performance, by Jason Weiss, Oregon State University
4. Field Technologies to Reduce Cracking, by Tyler Ley, Oklahoma State University, and Joe Vitale, Concrete Strategies LLC
1. Identify mineral and chemical admixtures available to reduce shrinkage in concrete mixtures.
2. Examine various applications of shrinkage reducing technologies in mitigating concrete shrinkage cracking.
3. Describe early and later-age shrinkage behavior of different concrete mixtures.
4. Discuss interactions between combinations of shrinkage reducing technologies, including mixtures with internal curing and super-absorbent admixtures.
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.15 CEU (1.5 PDH).
