As the supply of conventional supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) continue to fall behind concrete industry’s demand, new sources must be identified and evaluated to allow production of high-quality and durable concrete. This session reports on the latest research related to the use of ground bottom ash as a concrete SCM. These include studies on the chemical and physical characteristics of ground bottom ash, its pozzolanic reactivity, and its performance in concrete in terms of its impact on fresh, mechanical, and durability properties of concrete mixtures. The audience will become familiar with this potentially valuable new SCM source.

The contents of this course include four recorded presentations from the ACI 2022 Spring Convention:
• Characteristics of Ground Bottom Ash and Its Influence on Fresh and Hardened Properties of Concrete; Jan Olek, Purdue University
• Comparing the Performance of Ground Bottom Ash in Reactivity Tests to Performance in Concrete; Maria Juenger, University of Texas at Austin
• The Use of Coal Bottom Ash to Enhance Concrete Durability; Michael Thomas, University of New Brunswick
• Implementing Performance Based Specifications for Bottom, Reclaimed, and Traditional Fly Ash; Tyler Ley, Oklahoma State University
1. Compare the properties and performance of ground bottom ash versus fly ash and other concrete SCMs.
2. Recognize the impact of bottom ash pozzolan on fresh and hardened properties of concrete.
3. Explain the use of coal bottom ash to enhance concrete durability.
4. Identify methods for assessing the reactivity of bottom ash and other SCMs.
Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.15 CEU (1.5 PDH).
