This module introduces the fresh-property test methods and specimen preparation procedures used for ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The module provides an overview of ASTM C1856 and its role in modifying conventional ASTM test methods for UHPC materials. Participants will learn how UHPC differs from conventional concrete with respect to rheology, material composition, specimen fabrication, and thermal treatment requirements. The module also covers the ASTM C1437 test method for measuring flow and the ASTM C191 test method for determining setting time, including the modifications required for UHPC and the calculation and interpretation of test results. In addition, the module examines field specimen fabrication and testing procedures, highlights limitations and special considerations associated with ASTM C1856, and discusses common sources of testing variability and error when evaluating fresh UHPC properties.
  1. Explain the purpose, scope, and application of ASTM C1856 and identify the modifications and exceptions it introduces to conventional ASTM test methods for UHPC.
  2. Compare UHPC specimen fabrication, curing, thermal treatment, and testing procedures with those used for conventional concrete and describe the requirements for thermally treated specimens.
  3. Explain how the ASTM C1437 test method is used to measure the flow of hydraulic cement mortar and describe the modifications and calculations required to determine the flow of fresh UHPC.
  4. Explain how the ASTM C191 test method is used to determine the setting time of hydraulic cement and identify the modifications and special considerations required when testing UHPC.
  5. Describe the rheological and material composition characteristics of UHPC and explain how these properties influence specimen preparation, testing procedures, and test results.
  6. Apply ASTM C1856 procedures for fabricating and testing UHPC specimens in both laboratory and field settings, and recognize limitations, sources of error, and additional considerations that may affect test outcomes.
